ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER, DECEMBER '03-JANUARY '04

Welcome to the December 2003-January 2004 Anime Sacramento Newsletter. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months, at the private residence of Laurine White, Sacramento, California. Email the editor, LVBwhite@concourse.net for info and directions. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime (such as tv episodes), and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale. Anime Sacramento showings are non-smoking, non-alcoholic and non-hentai (if kids are here). The house has plenty on-street parking in front. It's 5 minutes walk from a supermarket and from the Bus 1 route, 10-minute drive from A- 1 Comics and diverse cuisine restaurants. There's no set program schedule; it's a social event. If you have allergies, this house has a cat.

Next meeting will be Saturday, January 10, from 1pm to 10pm. I may need to borrow a DVD player for the meeting only. Thank you kind folks who
brought munchies in November. We still have some cookies, some chips, Ritz crackers, Goldfish and Halloween candy. Thank you, Matt and Terisa,
for the cans of green tea. Thanks also to the anonymous donor of the box of Coca-Cola cans. Dinner break is 7-8pm (or whenever). Programming
will include a Stephen Chiao movie. Any requests? Or bring anime DVDs to view with others.

Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues for $1.80, 6 issues for $3.60. Make checks payable to Laurine White or send unused
postage stamps. If your subscription is expiring, ask to be added to the personal distribution list for the newsletter (it's not an attachment),
just send me an email. Remember, if you change your email address, please let me know, to stay on the distribution list. Also let me know if
your email is set up to reject distribution list emails. To Unsubscribe to the newsletter, just let me know.

Bottom-feeding filth peddlers have been even busier on the net lately. Formerly you could google for "Anime [insert local city here]" and maybe
find some links to the local anime meetup, anime club and other local fanac. That's how I discovered meetup, 2 other clubs, and some other local websites (listed in past issues of this newsletter). Google now, and an overwhelming number of sites are porn, which aren't local! Don't
go there! To lessen the chance of encountering those websites, google for "Anime [insert local city here] 2003".

http://www.sacramentoanime.com posts my newsletters in the "Articles' section of Nicky's website. Check it out. Nicky's anime get-togethers
are at a Chinese restaurant!

Sacramento Anime Enthusiasts (SanE) (http://home.doramail.com/iminsane/main.html) has anime showings the 3rd Friday of every month at someone's house in Rosemont, runs more Shojou and family-oriented anime, and is looking for more members. Japanese imports. It's at 1908 El Camino, as you exit Business Loop 80 (toward Reno) on the right, next to LaBries Sleep Center. Hours are

http://www.dhp-online.com/cocoro/index.html: Check out new and past Japanese culture books from Cocoro, including SILVER SCREEN SAMURAI: the Best of Samurai Movie Posters, 1930-2003, $20, released Feb 2004, see "Books" under Diamond Previews for November below. Cocoro's ANIME POSTER ART arrived, with over 100 pages of color anime poster art, from old favorites to 2004 releases, $20. Other DH books include JAPANESE MOVIE
POSTERS and COSPLAY GIRLS.

http://www.stonebridge.com: Recent book - THE DORAMA ENCYCLOPEDIA: A Guide to Japanese TV Drama since 1953, by Jonathan Clements & Motoko Tamamuro, comprehensive guide to 50 years of Japanese tv dramas, 480 pages, $25.

http://www.mightblowhold.com/lonewolf/index.htm: is a fan website for Lone Wolf and Cub, with news updates, including that the first two Lone
Wolf and Cub movies are now on DVD from AnimEigo (http://www.animeigo.com).

http://www.baubo5.com/index.html - In the last newsletter I may have made this website sound a bit dull. Check out the "mishmash of spiffy
links" for lots of links to Asian film sites (HK, samurai, horror, various Asian actors, bishonen webring), while "flex your head" has links to
books, music and esoteric subjects.

http://www.comicsone.com: has several new translated Asian comics titles for February 2004 (see Dec 03 Diamond Previews section below for
prices and more info), including THE FOUR CONSTABLES, a collaboration between Tony Wong and Andy Seto, based on a 40-year-old novel by Wen Rui- An, a kung fu mystery set in imperial China (check out the lovely artwork on the above website); MY SASSY GIRL, the "quirky and hilarious
[manhwa] hit from writer Ho Sik Kim and illustrator Dae Hong Min", "funny and touching romantic comedy", not to mention it was made into a very
popular Korean film a couple of years ago; HERO based on Zhang Yimou's Oscar-nominated movie, artwork by Wing Shing Ma (who does the gorgeous
art for Storm Riders and Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre). Another Feb.04 comics release is SISTER RED Bk.1, from Shizuru Hayashiya (Onegai Teacher
artist), a gothic drama manga, 200 pages, $10. A March 04 release is HOW TO DRAW KUNG FU COMICS: Learn the Ways of the Masters, by former
employees of Wing Shing Ma's and Andy Seto's studios, $20, 136 pages.// Also on the ComicsOne website is a "Create your own Cosplay" cards. //
Wing Shing Ma's art really is so beautiful. He also has 8 color prints (17"x19") with mocha frame, for $25 on the ComicsOne website, $30 if you
order it through your local comics store. During YaoiCon I picked up 15 issues of the Chinese version Storm Riders (between #370 and #395), $1
a book sale at Man's Trading Corp on Clay Street in S.F. Chinatown. Who cares that I can't read it? For that sale price I acquired a bunch of
fabulous Chinese sword art by Wing Shing Ma.// The problem with ComicsOne website is that they haven't a clue that the Koreans do not want their comics referred to as "manga". They're manhwa! For the first half of the 20th century, the Koreans were enslaved by Japan, and now they
don't want their comics creations mis-labelled as a Japanese word. Nicole, please make the requested changes to your website! If it's Korean,
it's Manhwa, not manga!

Miramax (bozos!) News: On its website, Miramax now says it plans to release the HERO movie in April 2004. (So, Miramax, what happened to the
release of the SHAOLIN SOCCER movie?) http://www.kungfucinema.com editorial that Miramax is now actively enforcing a ban on all Asian import
DVDs that Miramax has bought the rights to. Never mind how long Miramax plans to sit on those rights without releasing those films in any form,
recutting, replacing the music, and lying to us about release dates. KungFu Cinema calls Miramax's monopoly "immoral". Yes!

http://www.drunkenmaster.tv/ - If you're sick and tired of Miram-axe's games with the Asian films it acquires rights to, it may be too late to
order the All-region DVDs for HERO and SHAOLIN SOCCER from Drunken Master (or anywhere else domestically). Go to their website, send them an
email of what you want to order. In 2003, the Drunken Master booth was attracting crowds at WonderCon, FanimeCon and San Diego Comic-Con.
They're so busy, they haven't had time to update their website in quite awhile.

http://www.flyingswordsman.com - website for a wuxia and martial arts fanzine for 2004, with fiction, movie reviews and art, out of Lemon Grove,
CA. Also looking for original wu xia fiction and artwork. See the webpage for submission requirements. Looks like it'll be an e-zine, not paper. To be added to the mailing list, send email to editor@flyingswordsman.com

http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/manga - website for the latest info on the Del Rey manga line releases.

My stuff for sale: Japanese CDs: STEAM BOY DETECTIVE RED - music soundtrack album BLUE, drama album, $5 for the set; ULTRAMAN ACE double CD set ($7); SFX GRAFFITI-ULTRAMAN - 4 CDs for $12; SHADOW SKILL original music soundtrack double CD set, very nice music for $7.
