ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER, FEBRUARY-MARCH '04

Welcome to the February-March 2004 Anime Sacramento Newsletter. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months, at the private residence of Laurine White, Sacramento, California. Email the editor, LVBwhite@concourse.net for info and directions. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime (such as tv episodes), and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about
trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale. Anime Sacramento showings are non-smoking, non-alcoholic and non-hentai (if kids are here). The
house has plenty on-street parking in front. It's 5 minutes walk from a supermarket and from the Bus 1 route, 10-minute drive from A-1 Comics
and diverse cuisine restaurants. There's no set program schedule; it's a social event. If you have allergies, this house has a cat.

Next meeting will be Saturday, March13, from 1pm to 10pm. I may need to borrow a DVD player for the meeting only. Thank you kind folks who
brought munchies in November. We still have some cookies, chips. Thanks to the anonymous donor of the box of Coca-Cola cans. Dinner break is
7-8pm (or whenever). Programming will include a Stephen Chiao movie. Any requests? Or bring anime DVDs to view with others.

Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues for $1.80, 6 issues for $3.60. Make checks payable to Laurine White or send unused
postage stamps. If your subscription is expiring, ask to be added to the personal distribution list for the newsletter (it's not an attachment),
just send me an email. Remember, if you change your email address, please let me know, to stay on the distribution list. Also let me know if
your email is set up to reject distribution list emails. To Unsubscribe to the newsletter, just let me know.

http://www.thecrest.com - "Joji Hirota and Taiko Festival," presented by World Spirit, will be at the downtown Sacramento Crest Theater on
Sunday, Feb 22, 3pm. Ticket info to be announced. Also check the webpage http://www.jojihirota.com

Pacific Rim Festival will be Sunday, May 16, 10 am to 5 pm, in Old Sacramento. Free admission, food, street vendors, a job fair, Asian music and dancing. No official website I can find, but check http://www.asiancc.org/calendar.htm

KidRobot (http://www.kidrobot.com), with storefronts in San Francisco and Manhattan and the online store, is the coolest toystore around.
It's been written up in Bay Area and Sacramento newspapers, offers action figures you won't find elsewhere, many of them limited editions. 12-
inch figures recently available include Shocker (from InfraMan), Bruce Lee Tao edition, and an ugly Tokugawa Daimyo. The website includes a
photo-gallery of all the action figures ever sold thru Kidrobot. The San Francisco store is at 1512 Haight Street, ph# (415) 487-9000. (Sounds
like a good reason to visit the Haight-Ashbury.)

Guin Saga is a series of Japanese novels by Kaoru Kurimoto, now starting to be published in English (3 novels so far) by Vertical, Inc. of New York, translated by Alexander O. Smith. The hero, Guin, is a mysterious jaguar-headed, well-muscled warrior. One problem is that the books are (1) only in hardback so far (at $23 a pop, or cheaper at amazon.com), (2) with only 230 pages per volume, and (3) ordinary jaguar-head cover art. If they were available in $7 pb, they might be worth the money, but not at hb price. Japanese Guin Saga art books include one by Yoshitaka Amano, 120 pages of color art, $50, text in Japan, 10" by 10" square (to order, go to http://www.animebooks.com/guinsaga.html) and GUIN SAGA ILLUSTRATION by Jyun (Jun) Suemi, with 280 illos, 64 in color, 140 pages, $68 (a Diamond Previews import, see for January 2004 Previews, Books, this newsletter). With Guin Saga, Kaoru Kurimoto is trying to break the Guinness record for "the longest story which is written by one person". 89 books in the series have been published in Japanese as of May 2003, with a target of 100 novels. A Japanese website (with English) about the books is at http://guin-saga.netfirms.com/. The website says that the first 10 books in the series are pretty good heroic fantasy, but around Book 31 Guin becomes a minor character and the story turns into gay slash. Fine if you like gay slash, but not
necessarily for the heroic fantasy fans. Vertical, Inc (http://www.vertical-inc.com/books.html) also publishes BUDDHA (graphic novels by Osamu
Tezuka) in several volumes, RING by Koji Suzuki (with sequels, SPIRAL and LOOP coming up), as well as some other English-translated novels.
