ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER, AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2003

Welcome to the August-September 2003 Anime Sacramento Newsletter. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months, at the private residence of Laurine White, Sacramento, California. Email the editor, LVBwhite@concourse.net for
info and directions. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime (such as tv episodes), and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale. Anime Sacramento showings are non-smoking, non-alcoholic and non-hentai (if kids are here). The house has plenty on-street parking in front. It's 5 minutes walk from a supermarket and from the Bus 1 route, 10-minute drive from A-1 Comics and diverse cuisine restaurants. There's no set program schedule; it's a social event. If you have allergies, this house has a cat.

Next meeting will be Saturday, September 20, 2003, from 1pm to 10pm. Note: that's the 3rd weekend of September. Thank you kind folks who brought munchies in July. We already have lots of cookies, various types of chips, Japanese snacks, and regular Coke. There's ice in the freezer. Dinner break is 7-8pm (or whenever). Possible program items include more Fruits Basket, more Saiyuki, more Saiyuki, Chronicles of 12 Kingdoms, Tsukikage Ran, Ponpoko Tanuki (Studio Ghibli), Flirting Scholar (Stephen Chow). Any requests? If you have anime DVDs you want to view with others, please bring them to the show.

Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues for $1.80, 6 issues for $3.60. Make checks payable to Laurine White or send unused postage stamps. If your subscription is expiring, ask to be added to the personal distribution list for the newsletter (it's not an attachment), just send me an email. Remember, if you change your email address, please let me know, so I can keep you on the distribution
list. Also let me know if your email is set up to reject distribution list emails. If you want to Unsubscribe to the newsletter, just say so.

News from San Diego Comic-Con (held July 17-20, 2003) At Comic-Con in 1987 I picked up t-shirts for Lone Wolf and Cub, Usagi Yojimbo and Panda Khan. 2004: Lone Wolf and Cub manga series is now available (complete), and the DVD movies (Tom Wakayama) are being released by AnimEigo. Usagi Yojimbo publications and t-shirts are available; Stan Sakai was at Comic-Con to sign my 2004 Usagi Yojimbo calendar. Panda Khan is no more, but artist Dave Garcia was at Comic-Con as artist for Golden Age Tick. Comic-Con 2004 was a lot more fun than 1987.

Thru the Moebius Strip is a CGI fantasy film currently in production from GDC Entertainment (www.gdc-entertainment.com), based upon works by French graphic novel artist, Jean Moebius Giraud, for release in 2004. // Michael Madsen talked about the upcoming Kill Bill movie, in which he plays Bill's brother, Bud. He's also in a western, Blueberry, which opens in Paris in November 2003. I assume that Blueberry is based
on the French graphic novels illustrated by Giraud. // Quentin Tarentino's Kill Bill movie is so long that it is being released in 2 parts, part 1 in October, part 2 several months later. (And if you didn't know, Tarentino borrowed his Reservoir Dogs plot from the Chow Yun Fat movie, City on Fire.) // If you enjoyed the French graphic novels (like the Blueberry series) published in the 1970s, NBM Publishing (www.nbmpub.com) is currently publishing two sf/fantasy series very reminiscent of them: Gipsy (by Marini/Smolderen) and Wake (by Morvan/Buchet). NBM also published the excellent THE YELLOW JAR: 2 Tales from Japanese tradition by Patrick Atangan (Eisner award winner).

Moonlight Cutter was inspired by Barry Hughart, Jessica Amanda Salmonson,
Water Margin, Gu Long, Wing Shing Ma, Jin Yong?

The sample animation and production shots at Comicon look cool. // ADV has a new publishing arm, which will publish manga like Darkside Blues, Azumanga Daioh ($10, Sept 03), Apocalypse Meow (aka Cat S--t, an animal version of the Vietnam War), Kimera, and more. A list of manga titles was announced at Expo.

Korean Action Films: According to Ric Meyers, South Korean martial arts movies are now the best, HK movies having fallen in quality, due to gangsters, China taking over, and export of talent to America.
