ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER AUGUST-SEPT 2005

Welcome to the August-September 2005 Anime Sacramento Newsletter. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months at the private residence of Laurine White, Sacramento, California. Showings are non-smoking, non-alcoholic, and kid-friendly, when kids are here. The house has plenty of on-street parking in front, is 5 minutes walk from a supermarket and from the Bus 1 route, 10-minute drive from A1 Comics and diverse cuisine restaurants. There's usually no set schedule; it's a social event. Email the editor (me) at LVBwhite@concourse.net for info and directions. (Please put Subject line something like "Attention Laurine", so I know it isn't !@#$%&* spam. Fill in the subject line, and not with "Hi"!) Sorry if you have allergies; this house has a fat Siamese cat. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime tapes, and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale.

Next meeting will be on the 3rd Saturday in September, Sept 17, from 1pm to 10pm, and will not be combined with the Sacramento Anime screening. Ian has a conflicting schedule. For this meeting I'm going to be running retro giant robot anime episodes, a sentai episode in Japanese, and a HK or samurai film (maybe that new yokai samurai film, Kibakichi, which I picked up in L.A.). Thank you kind folks who brought munchies in August, cookies, canned sodas, chips & other goodies. Some sodas, chips, & Japanese snacks will be on hand for Sept. Dinner break is 7-8pm (or whenever). Any retro anime requests? (Or maybe I won't run Kibakichi. It's a fun cheesy last-stand-of-the-yokai-monsters samurai splatter film.)

Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues for $1.80, 6 issues for $3.60. Make checks payable to Laurine White or send unused postage stamps. If your subscription is expiring, send me an email to be added to the newsletter personal distribution list (it's not an attachment). (Nobody has subscribed to this zine for years. But how many other anime fanzines from the 1980s even exist these days? This newsletter is an institution! (And I'm an inmate.)) Remember, if you change your email address, please let me know, to stay on the distribution list. Also let me know if your email is set up to reject distribution list emails. To Unsubscribe, just let me know.

Stray Dogs & Lone Wolves: The Samurai Film Handbook by Patrick Galloway, $19.95 from Stone Bridge Press, finally arrived. It's somewhat of a misnomer because it only covers films currently available in America. With that in mind, it's fine for what it covers, including relevant cultural Japanese history and more recent samurai films. Where else would you find out that the Japanese blood-spurting mutation tracks back to SANJURO, when the FX tech had the pressure cranked up too high? (The most complete samurai film coverage is still Alain Silver's THE SAMURAI FILM (samurai films to 1974), just printed in a new edition.)

Sacramento Anime Meetup (http://anime.meetup.com/52/) needs a moderator. Until then no one can post to the local message board or send emails to anyone else on the meetup website. Better sites for anime fans to post would be at http://www.sacramentoanime.com and at the Amy's Yahoo site, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sacanimefen.

Sakuramento Anime Club meets every Sunday, 3pm to 7pm at the Rancho Cordova Library. Take I-50 to Bradshaw, turn north on Bradshaw to Folsom Blvd. and turn right, Turn left onto Paseo Rio Way/Old Winery Place, 1st driveway on the right. Meet in the room through the Gate Area right of the entrance.

http://www.x-tremegeek.com has opened a store in Rancho Cordova, at 11321 White Rock Road, off Sunrise Blvd, where they sell geek gadgets, geek apparel, computer accessories, games & collectibles.

Forget about the Kimi No Hanyo Anime Convention; the website no longer exists. I'd have said this convention looks about as likely to happen as Shige Sushi is to open in my neighborhood, but Shige Sushi finally opened on Madison Ave, first intersection east of Manzanita. Ah Chop Chop Chinese at Madison & Manzanita is gone, Starbucks will replace it. (That'll make Amy happy.) A great Chinese buffet (NY Grand Buffet) has opened in the shopping center on the northeast corner of Manzanita & Winding Way! Also, A-1 Comics will be moving from longtime location at Madison & Manzanita to 5361 Auburn Blvd (by Palm Ave) in October.

A certain comics company (wishing to stay anonymous) plans a new line of hentai/yaoi American titles in late '05/early '06. The first title may be Incubus. I saw a sample of yaoi art that was really nice.

The Korean manhwa booth was more set up for business this year than last. Freebies included a manhwa bag and MANHWA: The World of Korea Comics 2005 Sampler, with 16 sample manhwa inside.

http://www.shojobeat.com - Viz is starting a new line, "Shojo Beat: Manga from the Heart" monthly zine and manga titles (from 3 different Japanese publishers) that will begin serialization in the zine. These gentlemen themselves were actually setting out zine and mangas sampler on the seats. The monthly Shojo Beat zine is available the 3rd Tuesday of every month for $5.99, with 200+ pages of manga (Crimson Hero, Absolute Boyfriend, Nana, Kaze Hikaru), info on fashion, culture, music. The ADV Advocates Program is free to libraries. Del Rey Manga also has info for libraries. This panel reminded me - whatever happened to that anime club at the Roseville library? See Page 1 here for info on Sakuramento Anime, meeting Sundays at Rancho Cordova Library. (Library Margaret - this is for you.)
