ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER DEC 05-JANUARY 2006 Welcome to the October-November 2005 Anime Sacramento Newsletter. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months at the private residence of Laurine White, Sacramento, California. Showings are non-smoking, non-alcoholic, and kid-friendly, when kids are here. The house has plenty of on-street parking in front, is 5 minutes walk from a supermarket and from the Bus 1 route, 10-minute drive from A1 Comics and diverse cuisine restaurants. There's usually no set schedule; it's a social event. Email the editor (me) at LVBwhite (at) concourse.net for info and directions. (Please put Subject line something like "Attention Laurine", so I know it isn't !@#$%&* spam. Fill in the subject line, and not with "Hi"!) Sorry if you have allergies; this house has a fat Siamese cat. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime tapes, and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale.
Next meeting Next meeting, on the 4th Saturday in January 2006, Jan 28, from 1pm to 10pm, will be combined with the Sacramento Anime screening. Ian will show up with some new anime. Thank you kind folks who brought munchies in November, sodas, fresh fruit and cake. Chips, Japanese snacks and some canned sodas will be on hand. Dinner break is 7-8pm (or whenever). Front room will be reserved for Asian action films and some of that experimental stuff, so that we won't sully Ian's computer again. The November meeting was the largest in several years. Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues really weird, here's the URL where the blog was copied to, some Scandinavian language blog with only 2 paragraphs in English - http://andershj.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_andershj_archive.html. Aside: Just because this club changed its name from C/FO Sacramento to Anime Sacramento in 1989 does not make it a different club. Anime Sacramento is now over 21 years old (making it legal?).
Another site that showed up during a google for C/FO Sacramento led to a research paper called "Progress Against the Law: Fan Distribution, Copyright and the Explosive Growth of Japanese Animation" by Sean Leonard, MIT, 2003-2004. 102 pages with footnotes. Quoted from the paper: "Fred Patten, founder of the first anime club in the United States…" So, Unnamed Anime Club, there's no debate about which anime club was first in the U.S.. It was the C/FO, which continues to meet monthly. The paper is at http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/6805/student-papers/fall03-papers/Progress_Against_the_Law.html. The next Sacramento Anime, Manga & Cosplay Show will be Saturday, Jan 14, '06 (so my anime video show will be at the end of the month) at the Scottish Rite Center. There'll be another anime show on Saturday, July 15, '06. http://sacanime.com for info. For info on the Sacramento Collectors Shows at Scottish Rite Center, go to http://www.sacramentocomics.com. News courtesy of Jeff - Sony Pictures releases a DVD in December ($25) for the action-packed, fun Chinese martial arts movie, The White Dragon, about a noblewoman falling in love with a prince and accidentally acquires martial arts, and tries to save her prince from an assassin. Available in several languages, with subtitles, but no extras. // Another piece of news courtesy of Jeff is that, starting in January, several major newspapers will be adding (American fake) manga to their Sunday comics sections. Two titles to be published are Van Von Hunter by Ron Kaulfersch and Mike Schwark, and Peach Fuzz by Lindsay Cibos & ? This news is from an article at the Newsday website, http://www.newsday.com. The article, published on Nov 7th, mentions the manga versions of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys to be published by Papercutz, CosmoGirl running TokyoPop manga, and Harlequin Romance manga books. // Indian actress Aishwarya Rai (Bride and Prejudice) says finding work in Hollywood is no easy task - even for one of Bollywood's most recognizable leading ladies. She recently finished filming ``The Last Legion,'' a Hollywood epic about a Roman warrior, played by Colin Firth, who must protect a young Caesar as the Roman Empire crumbles. Shot in Slovakia, ``The Last Legion'' also stars Ben Kingsley and is scheduled for release in 2006. http://www.stonebridge.com News - Coming soon from Stone Bridge Press is THE WAY OF TAIKO by Heidi Varian and forward by Seiichi Tanaka, about the performance art of Japanese drumming, with color photos, glossary, 128 pages, $18.95. http://www.taiseng.com News - Tai Seng has a new Chinese action sword film for sale on DVD, BOOK AND SWORD, dubbed, list price $20, starring Vincent Zhao (THE BLADE) and Cheng Pei Pei (CROUCHING TIGER), based on the novel by Louis Cha (Jin Yong). The novel is now available in English, translated by Graham Earnshaw. Girl Taz sends the news that Robin Shou (RED TROUSERS) is directing a movie called DEAD MULE SUITCASE, now in pre-production, for release in 2007. It's about a rogue DEA agent search for his partner, who disappeared while undercover in Thailand. http://www.infinitystudios.com - Infinity Studios LLC has the rights to BLOOD ALONE by Masayuki Takano, about a beautiful young female vampire who loves a human. #1 will be published in January for $9.95, at your local comics store and Borders Books. Tom Cruise fired his sister as his publicist for the bad press he's been getting lately (but she's still working in his organization.) Wesley Snipes probably wishes he could fire somebody for the bad press he's been getting ever since BLADE 3. From action movie star to straight-to-video co-star, Snipes would have been co-starring with Jean-Claude Van Damme in THE HARD CORPS (or maybe it was HARD COPS), an action movie to be directed by Sheldon Lettich (BLOODSPORT). Then Lettich discovered he couldn't afford both their salaries and cancelled the project. So now it looks like Snipes will co-star with Mario Van Peebles in a thriller, "Hard Luck," also with Cybill Shepherd. The movie will be about a serial killer, a former drug dealer and a sadistic housewife. // Kirk Jones will star in the Blade tv series to air on Spike TV. Another straight-to-video action star is keeping busy. Mark Dascascos (CRYING FREEMAN, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, "The Crow" tv series) has filmed two movies in the Philippines for Sony Screen Gems DVD, THE HUNT FOR EAGLE ONE (co-starring Rutger Hauer) and the sequel, CRASH POINT. Another Mark Dacascos film, NOMAD, will be released in the U.S. by Harvey Weinstein in fall 2006. (That's the Harvey Weinstein formerly in charge of Miramaxe.) Mark will be showing up in new episodes of "Iron Chef" that will air on the Food Network in 2006. He'll also appear in THE CLEANER, a new film starring Lucy Liu and Cedric the Entertainer (as an amnesiac janitor), for release in 2006. Mark Dacascos news is at http://www.markdacascos.com. http://www.rightstuf.com News - If you collect issues of Protoculture Addicts (or even if you don’t), here the PA website: http://www.protoculture.ca (that's Canada, not California). // Seven Seas Entertainment (http://www.gomanga.com) has the rights to publish BoogiePop Phantom novels by Kouhei Kadono and the BoogiePop Phantom Doesn't Laugh manga (art by Kouji Ogata). DVD #1, with episodes 1-3, 12-page booklet and extras, will be out in Feb '06, $30; DVD #1 plus Series Artbox, for Feb '06 release, will be $40. // Urban Vision (http://www.urban-vision.com), which released the Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust DVD, has formed a new line of entertainment called AsiaVision, specializing in live action Asian films. One of its first releases will be "Curse, Death and Spirit", directed by Hideo Nakata (Ringu and The Ring Two). It also plans to bring the Japanese film "Azumi" to theatres in Spring of 2006. Do you want to learn Japanese, but don't know where to start?
