ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER, FEBRUARY - MARCH 2005

Welcome to the February - March 2005 Anime Sacramento Newsletter. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months, at the private residence of Laurine White, Sacramento, California. Email the editor, LVBwhite (at) concourse (dot) net for info and directions. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime (such as tv episodes), and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale. (Please put Subject line something like "Attention Laurine", or it might get accidentally deleted with all the !@#$%&* spam.) Anime Sacramento showings are non-smoking, non-alcoholic and non-hentai, when kids are here. The house has plenty on-street parking in front. It's 5 minutes walk from a supermarket and from the Bus 1 route, 10-minute drive from A-1 Comics and diverse cuisine restaurants. There's no set program schedule; it's a social event. If you have allergies, this house has a cat.

Next meeting, will be on the third Saturday, March 19, from 1pm to 10pm. It will be combined with the Sacramento Anime screening (with anime programming provided by Ian) for March. Thank you kind folks who brought munchies in January. Thank you Chris, Ashley, and Greco for the new anime episodes. Some sodas, chips, and Japanese snacks are on hand. Bring munchies to share. The schedule for March isn't set. Dinner break is 7-8pm (or whenever). Any anime requests? Bring your favorite new anime DVDs to watch with us. I also have lots of Asian action movie DVDs. Forget Shige Sushi, but there's another Japanese sushi restaurant not too far away, at dead end of Cypress at Manzanita (east side).

Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues for $1.80, 6 issues for $3.60. Make checks payable to Laurine White or send unused postage stamps. If your subscription is expiring, send me an email to be added to the newsletter personal distribution list (it's not an attachment). Remember, if you change your email address, please let me know, to stay on the distribution list. Also let me know if your email is set up to reject distribution list emails. To Unsubscribe, just let me know.

The Sacramento Pacific Rim Festival will be held in Old Sacramento on Sunday, May 22, with food, entertainment, and exhibits.

Miyazaki's HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE may get an American theatrical release this June. If that happens, would anyone be interested in seeing it as a group?

Buena Vista has already released Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, and The Cat Returns on DVD (three 2-disc sets, $30 each).

The Sacramento Anime & Manga Show is over, but the Sacramento Comic, Toy & Anime Show has been announced for Sunday, March 13, also at the Scottish Rite Center. And there will be another Sunrise Mall Anime & Manga Show on Saturday-Sunday, July 30-31, 2005, free admission, of course. If I get a free club table there, I'll be giving out more anime freebies and small Japanese posters for American films. At the Anime & Manga Show I bought a lovely art book, Tir na sorcha by Akemi Takada, at the Nikaku Animart table, and two nice FullMetal Alchemist bromides at the Anime-101 table. A couple of DMP yaoi titles were available at one table there. More info about their yaoi titles (such as, Only the Ring Finger Knows) is at http://dmpbooks.com/manga.

Handouts at the event include: Unwound (website - http://www.unwound.show) is a 60-minute webshow, 7 pm Pacific time Sunday, that reviews digitally-available anime series. It's hosted by Jesse Barredo & Michael Garcia. Tune your favorite MP3 player to Japan-A-Radio on Sunday nights by visiting http://www.japanaradio.com. Other handouts at the Sacramento Anime & Manga Show include: Toy Fusion Store Parking Lot Toy Show on Sunday, March 6, at 1908 El Camino Ave, Sacramento, just east of Business 80. // Henagi the Ninja Girl by Ben Seto - I guess it's a comicbook title from Black Sheep Comics (http://www.blacksheepcomics.com). // Ron Lim said he'll have a new sketchbook available at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

My favorite comicbook store is still A-1 Comics, at the intersection of Madison & Manzanita. They sell manga, manhwa, HK graphic novels, and have a good supply of anime DVDs, especially now that they finally have someone on staff who is interested in that stuff. Their website is http://www.a-1comics.com. A-1's other branch, at 818 Sunrise Blvd (near Cirby Way), is even larger, but I haven't been out there yet. Another great thing about the Madison & Manzanita intersection is that it has 3 Chinese restaurants (Hings, Ah-Chop-Chop, and Happy Gourmet (vegetarian)), a Vietnamese noodle house, and the Thai Hut. Looks like Shige Sushi ain't gonna happen.

So much for the Miramax theatrical release of Infernal Affairs. It never reached Sacramento, and the Miramax official DVD was released in December 2004.
