ANIME SACRAMENTO NEWSLETTER , FEB - MARCH 2002
We welcome Spring in March, but if you have nothing better to do while winter is still here, come to the next meeting of Anime Sacramento on March 9. That's the Second Saturday of the month. However, you should be reading this newsletter to be sure. Don't just assume the meeting will automatically be on the second Saturday. It may be on the third Saturday of May, because I'd like to see the Saigon Water Puppets at Freeborn Hall in Davis on May 11th. Meetings of Anime Sacramento are bi-monthly, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the odd-numbered months, at the private residence of Laurine White. Email me for directions. I enjoy trading non-commercial Japanese-language anime (such as tv episodes), and do limited freebie-dupes of same. E-mail me about trading tapes and some stuff I have for sale. Anime Sacramento e-mail address is lvbwhite@concourse.net

Next meeting is Saturday, March 9, 2002, from 1pm to 11pm. Thank you kind folks who brought munchies in January. Cookies, Cheez-its and sodas are on hand for next meeting. Dinner break is 7-8pm. Back rooms are off-limits except for the women's lounge. On the schedule is another Hong Kong movie on DVD, VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST, the concluding episodes of LEGEND OF BASARA, READ OR DIE 1-2, the complete REBOOT movie of "Daemon Rising", and some surprises.

Subscriptions to this newsletter are available, 3 issues for $1.80, 6 issues for $3.60. Make checks payable to Laurine White or send unused postage stamps. If your subscription is expiring, ask to be added to the personal distribution list for the newsletter (it's not an attachment) Just send me an email. Remember, if you change your email address, please let me know, so I can keep you on the distribution list. Also let me know if your email is set up to reject distribution list emails.

http://www.hkfilm.net/disney/index.html - Here's a website to check out if you're sick of those Miramax morons (Disney) butchering Hong Kong movies for American release, as well as changing perfectly good music soundtracks to some pseudo Chinese soundtrack. Their latest crime is chopping up SHAOLIN SOCCER with plans to release it as KUNG FU SOCCER this spring, dubbed, 20 minutes chopped out, and with a rap soundtrack. Is this any way to treat a Stephen Chow movie?? Check out the above-listed website to protest. Why do those dolts think we were watching Hong Kong movies in the first place? Because we preferred them to the typical Hollywood action movie crap. Now they take the HK movies and reduce them to Hollywood crap. Here's another URL, if you want to sign an online petition to Disney: http://www.petitiononline.com/warthkf/petition.html Not to mention Disney's not releasing Miyazaki's movies in a timely manner to DVD or video, after buying the rights to them.

Celestial Pictures, a Malaysian company, is negotiating rights for English-language release of Shaw Brothers movies on DVD, possibly starting this spring! In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Shaw Brothers was making some great Hong Kong action and sword movies in Mandarin, a few of which got released to American theaters and cut and dubbed for syndication on American tv in the 1980s. As long as Miramax keeps their grubby hands off these great films!

She may also have a cameo in the James Bond film now in production. // Donnie Yen directed the action sequences in SHURAYAKI HIME, otherwise directed by Shinsuke Sato, a violent film with wire fu and Japanese sword fighting. It should get an American theatrical release later this year. // The HK movie studio, Universe, and Warner Brothers plan to co-produce a movie called SWORDSMAN, about a samurai traveling to China, with shooting to begin in August. Dante Lam will direct and Takeshi Kaneshiro may star. // Studio Ghibli's anime version of HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE (Hauru no Ugoku Shiro) based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, will be released in spring of next year. Hayao Miyazaki is the executive producer,
